My son's first birthday is in August (20th). We recently moved from Ohio to Houston and can't afford the $1000.00+ round trip it would be to go home. We hardly know anyone here in Houston....so I'm wondering what to do. I know that he won't remember it, but it makes me sad to think that he won't be getting any gifts or have any family over for his birthday (even more so now that I've got prego hormones going again :-P) So, what do I do? Do I send announcements that its his birthday with his one year photos? Do I mention the wishlist I set up at babiesrus? Do I just suck it up and make him a cake and celebrate it quitely? What do you suggest?

Does anyone else understand why Wal-Mart changed the cashier age limit of 19 to sale alcohol now? It used to be 18 which is the legal limit to sale. Now Wal-Mart changed it to 19? I can see either being 18 (legal) or 21 (buying age), but what does 19 have to do with anything? Is this every wal-mart or just our district? Let me know what you guys think! :)
Ok, I have a question about this new cool tattoo. Does anyone know how about ink it takes for it? Because so far I have thirty plus ink in nearly every color, but nothing yet. Is it like 50 or 100?

Hello! My name is Christine, I'm 17 years old and from the outskirts of Myrtle Beach, SC. This entry is from June 24, 2008! I was a part of Coastal Carolina University's "Summer Arts Academy." Also known as, "Visual Arts Camp."
This post contains 70 pictures including the repeated teaser. Expect a lot of sewing, walking, and art! This day was our last day of classes before our art show so everyone at the camp is in a dire rush to finish pieces and put final touches to projects. Enjoy! :)

I have been cashiering for walmart for 3 years and its not picnick.
i have seen alot, and had alot thrown at me.
and holidays the weeks that follow up to holidays, the fourth and xmas are the worst.
yesterday i had this woman who was my first customer and i was scanning her shit and on the bag wheel the boy wanted to keep his gift card so i slid it across the bag thing. note that i DID NOT throw it like the lady claimed.
after that it all just went down hill.
the worse thing though has to be how the customers try to lie about a price reduction. i know im not supposed to but i take my digi cam with me and go take pix of the items that ARE on sale, vs the items that are not.
it has helped me from being an "easy fool" cashier.

I'm having a really shitty day, but I am so amused with myself right now.
BabyGirl was sleeping in my lap, and I got up to take the Q-Tips from Big Sister (seriously, where does she find this shit???). Saw the sheet on the floor, so I picked it up, and made a carrier out of it. BabyGirl is sleeping soundly against me, and I am not supporting her. Yay me!
Isn't there a guide to making a carrier out of a sheet somewhere online?

Is it okay to give a 12 month old Benadryl and Motrin at the same time? I sure hope so because I just did so without thinking. Kid is teething 3 of the front molars hence the Motrin plus he was having an especially allergic day so I gave him Benadryl 15 minutes later. He is now asleep early because he missed his afternoon nap.
Happy Independence Day! Remember, no comic on Monday. Also, thanks to all of you who've friended us! :D

Recommendations for a good backpack baby carrier? TIA
So I'm getting ready for work and when I pick up my clean pair of undies I find a PERFECT pattern of my netherbits faded into my undies.
Wow, I think I'm gonna take a picture later.

Hallo! Lisa again. I'm getting kind of addicted to this comm. Still 18, still from Pennsylvania. However, my July 2nd took place in West Virginia and Virginia (two states for the price of one!), as my mom, sister, and I were visiting our grandmother who lives in West Virginia for a few days. She decided to take us to this little day spa half an hour away for pampering and relaxation and all those things.
This definitely turned out to be the strangest day I've documented so far. XD

My son is almost 3 1/2 months old, and at the start of this week, he started doing something that worries me.
When he's in the carseat, he doesn't lay his head back. He likes to lift his head up out of the neckbrace pillow jiggie.
I know the neck/head pillow is supposed to protect him if we are ever in an accident, but if he doesn't have it around his head, then it's basically useless, isn't it?
I don't know what I'm supposed to do, short of taping his head back in the carseat :/
I can't force his head back, and I've tried with just a receiving blanket around his head (which is what we did when we left the hospital because he was so little), the brace pillow that came with the carseat, and both together.
He is strapped in properly with the buckle between his legs and the snap right by his armpits at nipple level.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!

Hi! I'm Meredith and this is my July 2nd. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and I'm a graduate student. I also work at a hospital in town as a medical transcriptionist and a biostatistics intern. I live downtown with my camera-shy boyfriend Ryan and our 3 cats: Steve Jobs, NewCat, and Wonky.
I took the day off of work and it's filled with a lot of lounging, shopping, and a surprising twist that makes interesting, eventful pictures nearly impossible!

( Enjoy! 57 pictures. )

Did the NBA's Doug Christie nearly choke to death when his wife refused to allow a female doctor to assist him?

So much sunshine...
So beautiful.
The "Ottawa Blues Fest" is this weekend... The folks that organize that must be out-of-their-collective-minds with happiness. :D
planning
~ again with the not-waking-up-at-6 thing and working from my home office. Lots to do... but still on track. (does a happy dance). Presentations are in two weeks. Two weeks from today!
~ Going to the bigger skate park later this'aft...
~ Thinking about renting a movie for tonight. I wish Iron Man would hurry up and become a rental. :D
~ Being reminded... as I type... that I need to take something out for dinner tonight.
wishing
~ that my many (many!!!) Amer'can friends here in La La land have a wonderful celebration of their independence day.

You know... that constitution that is at the heart and soul of today's celebration
in America makes it mighty clear that it is the duty of those that seek to uphold it
and live by the grace of it's virtue to replace leaders that threaten the integrity
of the union. So... can anyone explain why the guy in the oval is still there?
Seriously... get busy guys.
It's your duty.

So some number of months ago, I decided that I wanted very much to teach
my face to accept a razor blade ... versus an electric shaver. This has gone well...
although it took some time to get my neck to stop freaking out with the little red
bumpies and stuff. Now, of course, I'm all agog at how freaking expensive decent
razor blades are and I'm starting to listen to people tell me that 'lectric shavers have
gone up a notch in design... but ... whatever. For now... I'm enjoying the
shave-in-the-shower zone. Of course, picking the right shave cream is also key.
Why am I mentioning this? Specifically because I so love the feeling when I wash
my face during one of those "I'm not a girl" moments (no makeup) and can just
decide to reach into the water and bring a refreshing soak'en to my face ... which
I do quite a lot actually... When I do that in the morning... my face feels soooo
smooth. :) er... this is only a big deal because... for like twenty years I simply
never had that. I could never get a decent shave from the time I started shaving
until I hit my 40's.
Sad but true.
I have a 6 week old baby. She LOVES to be held standing up, with her feet up against your legs or the bed or something firm. She likes to "walk" on surfaces, its one of the things she likes to do when awake (besides, eat, poop, cry/whine, and play with her toys). So I was at my boyfriend's mother's house yesterday and my boyfriend was play"walking" with her, holding her standing up on his lap and letting her stretch her legs and do the walking motion on his legs, and we were saying how this is one of the baby's favorite activities and his mom said to us that we shouldn't let her do that too much, that causes bow legs. Is that at all true?
I am not sure if she is just saying it because she tends to think she knows more about babies when she hasn't had a baby herself in 27 years. But she is always telling me stuff, like that my breast milk is the reason the baby hiccups a lot, breast milk makes babies gasser than formula, formula is no different than breast milk (she hates that I breast feed)... so I never know if what she is saying is true or just things she is saying to prove that she knows more about babies than I do... granted this is my first baby... but I have done a lot of reading, talked with a lot of parents of babies now... so its not like i am a complete idiot in terms of babies... but I just was wondering if you guys could clarify some of the things she has been saying to me... especially the breast milk stuff in terms of hiccups, and the leg thing! I read somewhere that it was just the body's organs being immature... but she claims my breast milk is doing it to her... I know I can make her gassy with what eat in terms of breastfeeding... but are breast fed babies really gasser?
Also, the boppy... my baby LOVES the boppy and naps in it... and his mother told me its dangerous to let babies nap in the boppy, they can die. I guess she read an article recently of a baby dying in one... so are they really that dangerous to let baby's nap in... my baby loves to nap in hers... especially since she HATES being flat on her back for some reason...
Also when can you start letting your baby sleep on their tummy? my baby is more comfy on her tummy (she doesn't sleep well at all on her back, she is up every 20 minutes when she sleeps on her back...) I know there is that fear of SIDS... but my aunt, who is a nurse, said that usually if a baby is going to have SIDS they have that to begin with and will get it whether they are on their back or tummy... its more that a baby is told to be on their back due to at an early age they can't lift their heads... so when can they sleep on their tummy at night? My baby has full mobility in terms of turning her head back and forth and has a VERY strong neck muscle... she holds her head up when you hold her all the time and always turns her head from side to side for tummy time... so I am just curious... like I said, this is a my first baby... so any clarification would be nice!
Thanks!!
*EDIT* when she naps in the boppy I am right there in the same room, but its where she is more comfy... she hates being flat on her back, so she won't sleep for naps unless she is lifted or on her tummy (she always passes out during tummy time) she just sleeps more soundly like that... flat on her back we only get 10-20 minutes of a nap and then just a crying fit... so in order for a not so cranky baby and mommy, I let her sleep in the boppy when I do stuff around the room... but then I was told I shouldn't even do that because she could die
